Holder of a PhD in Political Science from the Free University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), she has since held academic positions both there and at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). Since 2020 she has been Professor of Political Science at Bocconi University, where she is also Generali Chair in European Policies and President of the Institute of European Policy Making. Her work focuses on how international cooperation to deal with global challenges, such as governance, migration or climate, interacts with domestic politics, contributing to an understanding of the rise of populism and the far right, political polarization and fragmentation, public service provision and corruption. De Vries chairs the external advisory board of the WZB Social Science Center in Berlin (Germany) and is a member of the European Integration Committee of the Dutch Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs and the Board of Trustees of the Hertie School (Germany). In 2013, she was selected as a Young Global Leader in the World Economic Forum.
