Professor of Fisheries at the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre (Canada) and Principal Investigator of the Sea Around Us project. He has studied modes of exploiting aquatic ecosystems in Africa, Asia, Oceania and America and is co-founder of FishBase.org. He holds the Ramon Margalef Prize in Ecology and has authored over 500 scientific papers and a number of books, notably Five Easy Pieces: the Impact of Fisheries on Marine Ecosystems and Gasping Fish and Panting Squids: Oxygen, Temperature and the Growth of Water-Breathing Animals.
