Professor of Economics at Bocconi University (Italy), where he also serves as Rector. He previously occupied teaching posts at Stanford and UCLA. His research areas are macroeconomics and monetary economics, political economy, public economics and international economics. A foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, he holds the Yrjo Jahnsson Award from the European Economic Association, of which he is also a past president.
