Composer and Emeritus Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (France), his research topics span the history of music theory from antiquity to the present day, 20th-century composition techniques, and relations between aesthetics, science, perception and organology since the start of the modern age. Founder of the Social History of Music Seminar and the doctorate course on 20th-Century Music and Musicology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (France).
