Researcher at the University of Helsinki (Finland), where he taught zoology and animal ecology. He was a member or advisor of numerous academic and research institutions, including the National Research Council of Finland, the International Ecology Institute and the NCEAS research center in Santa Barbara (United States).
He served on the editorial boards of scholarly journals such as Trends in Ecology and Evolution and in 2000 was distinguished with the Balzan Prize for Ecological Sciences. Winner of the 2015 Frontiers of Knowledge Awards in Ecology and Conservation Biology, he died in May 2016 before the award ceremony.
