Isabel Burdiel is Professor of Modern History at the University of Valencia. Her research focuses on the political and cultural history of 19th-century European liberalism, with a particular interest in post-revolutionary constitutional monarchies. She has also studied the relationship between history and literature, and the heuristic potential of biographical history. Founder and first director of the European Network on the Theory and Practice of Biography, her books include Isabel II. Una biografía (1830-1904), winner of Spain’s 2011 National History Prize, La historia biográfica en Europa (with Roy Foster), and Emilia Pardo Bazán, which received awards from the Asociación de Historia Contemporánea in 2019 and the Real Academia Española in 2021. She is also author of such papers as “Myths of Failure, Myths of Success: New Perspectives on Nineteenth-century Spanish Liberalism” (Journal of Modern History), and “The Queen, the Woman and the Middle Class. The Symbolic Failure of Isabel II of Spain” (Social History).
