Joan Matabosch joined the Teatro Real as Artistic Director during the 2013-2014 season. Previously, from 1997 to 2013, he was Artistic Director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, where he also held the posts of Deputy Artistic Director and Head of the Department of Dramatic Art. At both the Real and the Liceu he worked to consolidate the theater’s 20th century repertoire and to promote co-productions with major national and international theaters. As well as a degree in Piano, Vocal Performance and Harmony, he holds a BA in Information Sciences from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. A founder and former treasurer and president of Opera Europa (a professional association of opera companies and festivals with over 233 members in 44 countries), and a member of the Artistic Council of Spain’s National Institute of Performing Arts and Music (INAEM), he has worked as a journalist and as an opera, theater, music and dance critic for various publications, and has served on the jury of prestigious international music competitions.
