Robert H. Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Economics at Northwestern University (Illinois). A former editor of Journal of Economic History and President of the Economic History Association, he was also editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History. His current research concerns the economic roots of technological progress and the growth of useful knowledge in European societies, the evolutionary approach to the economic history of technological change, and the welfare impact of economic progress.
