John Dupré is Professor of Philosophy of Science, with a focus on philosophy of biology, at the University of Exeter, where he is also Consulting Director of the Centre for the Study of Life Sciences, Egenis, which he led from 2002 to 2022. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1981 and two years later moved to Stanford University where he taught until 1996. On his return to the UK, he took up the post of Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, where he headed the reintroduction of philosophy. His research interests lie in biological classification, traditional problems of essentialism, reductionism, and evolution and the limitations of evolutionary psychology, among other topics. In his most recent work, he addresses the implications of a process ontology for our understanding of human existence. Prof. Dupré has over 240 publications to his name and is author or co-author of around a dozen book titles. Among other honors, in 2023 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society.
