Visiting Professor at IESE Business School, where his research focuses on the financial crisis and the reform of the institutional framework of the euro. He served on the Executive Board and Governing Council of the European Central Bank, which he joined from the Executive Board and Governing Council of the Banco de España. A former Professor of Economics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, whose Public Finance Department he headed, he has also undertaken advisory work for the World Bank and European Commission.
