A largely self-taught musician who began composing at the age of twelve, he has over 150 works to his name in diverse genres including chamber, orchestral, vocal and electronic music, various concertos and five operas. In 1964, he founded Spain’s first electronic music laboratory followed shortly by the ALEA group, which for eight years brought new music and non-Western musical cultures to the Spanish public. A Professor of Composition in Buffalo (New York), Ottawa, Montreal, Madrid, Milan and Strasbourg, he is also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Spain).
