Holder of degrees in philosophy, piano and composition. He has held a professorship since 1992 at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice where he teaches contemporary music history. After leading the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid from 2011 to 2015, he took up the director's post at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the world’s oldest working opera theater.
Formerly Artistic Director of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, General and Artistic Director of the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon and Artistic Director of the Mozart Festival in A Coruña.
