BIO
Paul Wassmann is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. A participant in over thirty research cruises, he has studied pelagic-benthic coupling and plankton in most European seas. His research focuses on Arctic marine system ecology, vertical flux and flux regulation and carbon flux in marine ecosystems as a function of trophic state and climate change. He has also worked on Arctic tipping points and physical-biological coupled 3D models of primary production, and has served as leader of the Arctic Marine Ecosystem Research Network (ARCTOS) and the UiT’s ARCTOS PhD School. Wassmann has edited numerous publications on the marine ecology of the Arctic, the latest of which is the book Whither the Arctic Ocean? published in 2021 by the BBVA Foundation. Among other distinctions, he holds the 2023 medal of the International Arctic Science Committee.
