Raquel García-Tomás is a composer specializing in interdisciplinary creation who completed her doctorate at the Royal College of Music in London. Highlights of her career include collaborations with English National Ballet, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele. Her catalogue spans chamber, choreographic, electroacoustic, jazz and solo works, along with video and opera. In this last genre, she has written Je suis narcissiste, premiered during the season programs of Teatro Real de Madrid, Teatro Español, and Teatre Lliure (Barcelona), and nominated for the 2020 International Opera Awards, and Alexina B. This last work, funded by a Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Cultural Creators, had its premiere in the Gran Teatre del Liceu on March 18, 2023 and won the 2024 MAX Prize. García-Tomás has worked with and received commissions from the London Sinfonietta, the Oslo Sinfonietta, the Phace Ensemble, and the Orquestra de Cadaqués Contemporary Ensemble, among others, and received Spain’s National Music Prize in 2020 “for the interdisciplinary, innovative and daring nature of a distinctive compositional language.” In 2017, she was distinguished with RNE’s ‘El Ojo Crítico’ Award for Classical Music and in 2024 received both the Premier Nacional de Cultura of the Catalonian Government and the Gold Medal of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
