German pianist and musicologist, he is a celebrated performer of the works of 20th-century authors like Paul Hindemith and Wolfgang Rihm. He has taught at the Würzburg University of Music and the Mozarteum Salzburg (Austria), where he founded the Institute for Musical Hermeneutics. President of the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts since 2003, he is also Head of the Music Department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, a post he took up in 2002, and the editor of a 16-volume handbook of musical genres.
