Research Professor in the Vaccine and Gene Expression Unit at the CSIC Center for Biological Research (Spain), which he led from 2004 to 2012. He is currently working on the development of recombinant vaccines against leishmaniasis, and gene activation during the protective response to the parasite. A member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and International Health, he is also a former vice president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
