Violeta Demonte is Emerita Professor of Spanish at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy. Her specialist areas are theoretical linguistics and descriptive grammar, in which she has contributed such titles as Teoría sintáctica. De las estructuras a la rección (1989), Detrás de la palabra (1991), and Gramática descriptiva de la lengua española (1999), co-edited with Ignacio Bosque. A former director of the Institute of Language and Literature of the Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales (CSIC), where she founded the Linguistics and Cognitive Science group, she has been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota and El Colegio de México, among other centers, and a visiting researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Southern California and Utrecht University. Between 2004 and 2007, she was Director General of Research with the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science. Her distinctions include the Ramón Menéndez Pidal National Research Prize in the Humanities.
