Emeritus Professor of Molecular Microbiology at Biozentrum (Switzerland), and Nobel Laureate in Medicine for the discovery of restriction enzymes. His research areas include the recombination of nonhomologous DNA as a means to bring about new gene functions by the fusion of previously independent segments, and the study of biological evolution as a product of molecular evolution. Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and president of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.
